Govt gears up to provide land pattas to landless individuals
MP, 19 Jan 2025, Kolkata: The Bengal government is taking initiatives to provide land pattas to individuals, who are landless yet potential beneficiaries of the ‘Banglar Bari’ housing scheme.
The initiatives aim to ensure that these beneficiaries get a plot where they can set up houses with the funds provided by the state government under the ‘Banglar Bari’ scheme. The state Panchayat department that has been implementing the ‘Banglar Bari’ scheme has already asked all the district administrations to consider the proposal on how land pattas can be given to the eligible landless beneficiaries for setting up a house.
The district administrations have also been directed to find out the possibility whether plots can be given to those landless beneficiaries within this year. The Mamata Banerjee government is taking a humanitarian approach to provide land pattas to those who do not have lands of their own.
Earlier as well, the state government had handed over freehold lands to the beneficiaries. Panchayat minister Pradip Mazumdar has recently said that the state government will not deprive any eligible beneficiaries.
The state government has introduced the ‘Banglar Bari’ scheme to provide funds to the potential beneficiaries for setting up their houses. The Centre had stopped providing funds to the state under the Awas Yojana.
After the Bengal government credited the first installment of funds of Rs 60,000 to 12 lakh beneficiaries in their bank accounts for constructing houses under the “Banglar Bari” scheme, the Panchayat department directed the BDOs to ensure that the beneficiaries could avail building materials at a reasonable price and the suppliers cannot increase the price as there will be a demand for these materials.
The Panchayat department has already sent a standard operating procedure (SoP) to the district magistrates (DMs) on how to carry out surveillance on the progress in the construction of houses of each individual beneficiary under the scheme.
The remaining beneficiaries will also receive their share by January 2026. Of 16 lakh beneficiaries, 8 lakhs will receive funds in May-June 2025 and the rest will receive it by December-January.
