Death Penalty for Multiple Rapists and Murderers in Bengal Amidst Ongoing RG Kar Case
Agencies, Kolkata, January 20, 2025 : Before and after the tragic rape and murder of a 31-year-old post-graduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, several other heinous crimes in West Bengal have led to death penalties, intensifying public outcry and protests. These developments come amidst the anticipation of a verdict in the RG Kar case, which has sparked widespread outrage across the state.
On January 19, 2025, as the CBI prepared to deliver its verdict in the RG Kar case, a Pocso court in Hooghly’s Chinsurah handed a death sentence to Ashok Singh, 45, for the rape and murder of a five-year-old girl. Singh had lured the child with the promise of chocolates before committing the crime. The girl had gone missing on November 24, 2024, and her body was found at Singh's residence hours later. Singh was arrested the same night, and the trial began swiftly, with the chargesheet filed within two weeks.
Just five days prior, another tragic incident unfolded in South 24 Parganas' Kultali, where a nine-year-old girl was raped and murdered by 19-year-old Mustaqin Sardar. On December 6, 2024, a Pocso court in Baruipur sentenced Sardar to death, completing the investigation and chargesheeting the case within a mere 25 days. Eyewitnesses and CCTV footage helped track down Sardar, who later confessed to the crime.
In another disturbing case, a 10-year-old girl was abducted, raped, and murdered in Farakka, around 297 km north of Kolkata, during the Durga Puja festivities in October 2024. The convict, Dinabandhu Haldar, 35, was sentenced to death on December 13, 2024, while his accomplice, Subhajit Haldar, was handed a life sentence. The victim’s family discovered her body after forcing Haldar to open his door, and the investigation revealed disturbing details of the crime.
Similarly, in Siliguri, a 16-year-old girl was raped and murdered on August 21, 2023. The incident, which occurred in an abandoned area under the jurisdiction of Matigara police station, led to the arrest of Mohammad Abbas within six hours. Abbas later confessed to the crime, and a Siliguri Court awarded him the death penalty within 13 months of the incident. Special Public Prosecutor Bivas Chatterjee emphasized the need for the death sentence to serve as a message to deter others from committing such heinous crimes. The sentence was delivered under sections 302 (murder) and section 6 of the POCSO Act.
Amid these grim cases, the RG Kar rape and murder case has drawn significant attention, with public demands for swift justice. Protests following the tragic incident at the RG Kar hospital have coincided with these disturbing crimes. As the CBI led the investigation into the RG Kar case, public sentiment remained strong, calling for the death penalty for the accused, Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police.
In response to this public outrage, swift legal actions in other districts saw death penalties handed down to the perpetrators of similar crimes. On December 13, 2024, Dinabandhu Halder was sentenced to death in the Farakka case, while his accomplice received life imprisonment. In another incident in Joynagar, South 24 Parganas, a 19-year-old man was sentenced to death on December 7, 2024, for the rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl.
These sentences are seen as a signal of the state’s commitment to fast-track justice in cases of child rape and murder. The state has seen a growing demand for stricter laws and harsher punishments in the wake of these incidents. Special Public Prosecutor Bivas Chatterjee, who represented the state in the Siliguri rape-murder case, emphasized the need for severe penalties to deter future crimes.
Despite the swift justice in these cases, the RG Kar case remains a focal point. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed frustration over the case being transferred to the CBI, stating that the state had demanded a death sentence for the accused. The family of the RG Kar victim has vowed to appeal the verdict in higher courts. The case continues to dominate public discourse, and the families of the victims remain determined to seek justice.
