Benita Laishram Brings Manipuri Folk Music to Global Stage at Dubai’s India Pavilion

Asem Bhakta, KalimNews, Imphal, 15 January 2025: The India Pavilion at the Global Village Dubai 2024-25, running from 16 October 2024 to 10 May 2025, has become a vibrant showcase of India’s rich cultural heritage. Among its standout features is the performance of Benita Laishram, a celebrated folk singer from Manipur whose artistry has garnered acclaim across the globe.

Benita Laishram, 24, rose to prominence as the 4th place winner of Bharat Ka Amrit Kalash, India's first national folk song reality show. Organized by Doordarshan Kendra (DDK) and sponsored by the Ministry of Arts and Culture, Government of India, the show was a pioneering effort to revive and spotlight India’s traditional folk music. It provided a platform for regional talent like Benita to shine, leading her to national recognition and beyond.

Her soulful interpretations of Manipuri folk music have not only captivated audiences at home but also earned her a place on international platforms. At the India Pavilion, her performance is anticipated to be a highlight, bringing the unique musical traditions of Manipur to a global audience.

The Ministry of Arts and Culture has been instrumental in initiatives like the India Pavilion and programs such as Bharat Ka Amrit Kalash, emphasizing India’s cultural diversity and artistic excellence on the world stage. The nightly Indian Cultural Festival at the pavilion, where Benita will perform, features an array of artistic presentations, including dance, fashion, and music. Running from 7 PM to 10 PM daily, it showcases the breadth of India’s artistic talent, with Benita’s performance expected to stand out as a memorable moment.

A proud representative of the culturally rich state of Manipur, Benita has committed her career to preserving and promoting Manipuri folk traditions. A "B" Grade artist at All India Radio, Imphal station, and a diploma holder from Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, she has consistently showcased her versatility and dedication to her craft. Her accolades include representing Manipur at the 19th Celebrating North East India festival in Istanbul, Turkey, and winning the Best Female Singer title at the 9th Nongin Manipur Music Video competition in 2024, organized by Film Forum Manipur at MSFDS.

Benita’s ability to perform in various dialects, fostering unity, love, peace, and diversity, has made her a cultural ambassador for her state and country.
