2 arrested for smuggling drugs worth Rs 62 crore in Manipur


India Today, January 18, 2025 : The Assam Rifles busted a drug syndicate in Manipur's Churachandpur and arrested two people for attempting to smuggle drugs worth around Rs 62 crore.Two people have been arrested in Manipur's Churachandpur district after the Assam Rifles busted a drug smuggling syndicate and seized a massive cache of banned Yaba tablets and brown sugar worth around Rs 62 crore.

The operation was conducted based on credible inputs over the movement of contrabands from Myanmar towards Mata village in Churachandpur. The arrested individuals have been identified as Chingsen (36) and L Pausuanlal Simte (38).

An Assam Rifles team deployed at Veng established a mobile vehicle check post at Mata village around 11.30 pm on Wednesday. Around 4.30 am on Thursday, the team stopped a Fortuner car having a registration number from Uttar Pradesh.

During frisking, the two people, both of whom are residents in Churachandpur district, admitted to carrying contraband items, which includes brown sugar and Yaba tablets.

The Assam Rifles team recovered 208 soap cases containing brown sugar worth Rs 12 crore, around two lakh Yaba tablets worth approximately Rs 50 crore, Rs 3.37 lakh in cash, four smartphones with six Indian SIM cards and a Myanmarese SIM card, and the Fortuner car.

The seized items and the arrested individuals have been handed over to Churachandpur Police Station for further investigation.
