Veteran Journalist Kishore Seram to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award at Kalyan Barooah Memorial Awards 2024
With a career spanning over 38 years, Kishore Seram has established himself as a prominent figure in Indian journalism. His journey began with The Link magazine and later saw him hold key positions at major media outlets including Patriot newspaper, where he served as Chief Reporter and Special Correspondent, and North East Sun magazine, where he led as Executive Editor for eight years.
Seram's extensive career also includes stints as Acting News Editor at City Times of Khaleej Times in Dubai, and Assistant Editor at The Emirates Evening Post. Upon returning to India, he joined The Indian Express in New Delhi as Senior Assistant Editor, followed by a six-year tenure as Senior Editor at OPEN magazine. In 2014, he founded his own magazine, Discover India’s Northeast, a platform dedicated to showcasing the rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and diverse people of the Northeast region.
A passionate advocate for the Northeast, Seram’s efforts to bring the stories of the region to the national stage have earned him widespread recognition. In addition to his editorial work, he has directed and produced over a dozen documentaries on the Northeast, many of which were commissioned by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).
Beyond his journalistic work, Seram has mentored and nurtured many young journalists who have gone on to make their mark in some of India's most respected media houses. His commitment to the development of the media industry and his storytelling prowess have made him a celebrated figure in Indian journalism.
The 2nd Kalyan Barooah Memorial Awards 2024 will also honor other notable journalists in various categories. Mubina Akhtar, a freelance journalist, will be recognized in the print media category. Mridusmanta Boruah of Pratidin Times will be honored in the electronic media category, while Dr. Kshetrimayum Chitrabhanu Devi of Imphal Review of Arts and Politics will be awarded in the digital media category.
The jury for this year’s awards included distinguished personalities such as Utpal Borpujari, Moushumi Chakraborty, Sandeep Phukan, Professor Sashwati Goswami, and Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty. Special mentions were given to Farhana Ahmed of The Assam Tribune for her impactful coverage of human trafficking and forced migration, and to Aparamita Das for her photo essay under the still photography category.
This year’s awards ceremony, scheduled for December 11, promises to be a celebration of the invaluable contributions made by journalists working tirelessly to shine a light on the rich diversity and challenges of the Northeast region.
