‘State to soon invite applications for student internship scheme’


SOUMITRA NANDI, MP, 13 Dec 2024, Kolkata: The Higher Education department will soon bring out advertisements in connection with the ‘West Bengal Students Internship Scheme’, inviting applications from eligible students. 
“We will soon come out with advertisements in connection with the West Bengal Students Internship Scheme. It was passed by the state Cabinet and the Chief Secretary has already held a meeting regarding modalities of the scheme. Students who will be roped in under the scheme will get a monthly salary of Rs 10,000 per month during the training period,” said Binod Kumar, principal secretary of the state Higher Education department on the sidelines of a special session on “Higher Education in 21st Century – Possibilities and Challenges under New Education Policy 2020” organised by MCCI on Thursday. 
Sources in the Higher Education department said, college, ITI or Diploma passed students with 60 per cent marks can apply for the scheme and there are plans to rope in 7,500 candidates to start with. They will get the opportunity to work in various government departments to get real time experience of the work of the state government. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced the plan for this scheme in 2022. 
“The performance of the students’ will be reviewed after a year. Ones performing well may get the opportunity to work with the state government. Each one of them will be handed over a certificate with ranking or grading,” a department official said. 
Kumar wants universities to set skills as per requirement of the industry and urged the industry to set up a centre in the varsities where their representatives can go and directly teach the students. He maintained that the practice is already happening in the field of computer science. 
Emphasising the importance of leveraging technology and innovative practices, he advocated better liaison with the academic institutions on the part of the industry. Amit Saraogi, president, MCCI, Padma Shri Prof Ajoy Kumar Ray, Director, JIS Institute of Advance Studies & Research, Suranjan Das, vice-chancellor, Adamas University and Prof Bhaskar Gupta, vice-chancellor, Jadavpur University also spoke on the occasion.
