BJP MLA Nikhil Ranjan Dey Summoned by Kolkata Police in Extortion Case Involving Abhishek Banerjee's Name

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, December 28, 2024, Kolkata :  The investigation into an extortion case allegedly linked to the name of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee has taken a new turn, with Cooch Behar BJP MLA Nikhil Ranjan Dey being summoned by the Kolkata Police. The Shakespeare Sarani police sent an email summons to Dey, instructing him to appear at the police station within the next three days for questioning.

The case centers on accusations that members of an extortion ring were using Abhishek Banerjee’s name to facilitate illegal financial transactions. A formal complaint was lodged at the Shakespeare Sarani police station, and during the investigation, Nikhil Ranjan Dey’s name emerged. As a result, police have now called him in to answer questions related to the case.

Dey, however, has vehemently denied the charges, calling them "false" and asserting, "I am ready to cooperate in the investigation." Despite his denial, police sources indicate that the MLA will be interrogated to extract crucial details about the case. The Shakespeare Sarani police are continuing to gather evidence and have already spoken to the complainants.

The incident has sparked a political storm in West Bengal. The ruling Trinamool Congress has suggested that the case could be part of an internal conspiracy orchestrated by the BJP, while the opposition party has dismissed the allegations as baseless, accusing the TMC of using the matter for political vendetta.

Once Dey is interrogated, police are expected to compile a detailed report on the investigation. The case has stirred significant tension between the two major political parties, with the outcome likely to influence the state’s political landscape in the coming weeks.
