Manipur CM N. Biren Singh: Police Recruits to Work as a Team to Restore Peace
DERGAON (ASSAM),DECEMBER 23, 2024 : Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Monday announced that newly recruited police cadets, including those from the Meitei and Kuki communities, will be posted together as a "team" to promote peace in the ethnic violence-hit northeastern state.
Nearly 2,000 recruits of the Manipur Police passed out from the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Assam, on Monday, bolstering the state's police force. Assam and Manipur Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and CM Singh attended the ceremony as chief guests.
"The community-wise division happened due to the present situation. It was not like this earlier, and I will not allow this to happen in the future," the Chief Minister told reporters after the ceremony.
The newly trained personnel will be tasked to work together as a cohesive unit, similar to how they trained at the academy. "We have to start working together to bring peace to the state. Their postings will be together. We will not break the team. We will try to restore the unity of earlier Manipur," Singh emphasized.
Of the 1,946 police recruits who graduated from the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy, the caste distribution includes 62% Meiteis, 12% Kukis, and 26% belonging to the Naga and other tribes.
Addressing the ongoing law-and-order situation in Manipur, Singh admitted that it remains complex but expressed optimism about progress. "We all have seen that peace is returning to the state," he stated.
On recent arrests of Bangladeshi nationals illegally entering India through Manipur, Singh clarified that the issue is not limited to his state. "Bangladeshis illegally entering India are being arrested in Manipur, Assam, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh. We all have to tackle it together as it is our region's issue," he explained.
