Man gets jail for 20 yrs for rape of 6-year-old

MP, 13 Dec 2024, Siliguri: The special POCSO court in Siliguri has sentenced a man to 20 years rigorous imprisonment for the rape of a 6-year-old girl in 2017. The convict, Kiran Orao, was also fined Rs 40,000. 

Additional Sessions Judge Anita Mehrotra Mathur, found Orao guilty under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The court has also ordered a compensation of Rs 3 lakh to be paid to the victim’s family. The fine amount will also be given to the family. 

The incident occurred in 2017 in Siliguri when Orao lured the child to an abandoned place and raped her. The case was registered at the police station and later transferred to the Women’s Police Station on September 28, 2017. 

The trial was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After spending five years in jail, Orao was granted bail on November 11, 2022, but the legal proceedings continued. 

Public Prosecutor Sunanda Sarkar said: “Despite the delays, justice has been served. The conviction sends a strong message that such heinous crimes will not be tolerated.”
