One Held for Illegal Sand Mining in Siliguri

EOI, SILIGURI, NOVEMBER 26, 2024 : In a late-night operation at Don Bosco More in Siliguri on Monday, Bhakti Nagar Police seized a sand-laden pickup truck and arrested its driver. The operation was part of an intensified effort to curb illegal sand mining in north Bengal, following directives from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to tackle the issue more stringently.

Illegal sand extraction has been a long-standing problem, threatening the survival of rivers and causing significant losses to government revenue. Despite ongoing government efforts, such activities continue to flourish, often conducted covertly during the night. Authorities have emphasized the critical importance of protecting natural resources.

"The state government has made it clear that there will be zero tolerance for such illegal activities," a police spokesperson stated.

Residents and environmentalists have applauded the police action but stress the need for consistent monitoring and stricter penalties to deter offenders. The police have assured that similar operations will continue across north Bengal to safeguard river ecosystems.
