Mamata Banerjee Inaugurates 'Saras Mela' in Darjeeling, Announces Key Development Changes for Hills

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, November 13, 2024, Darjeeling:  :
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the much-anticipated 'Saras Mela' at Darjeeling Crossroads this afternoon, marking the commencement of the annual fair that showcases local arts, crafts, and culture. The event, which began at 3 PM, is a significant cultural highlight for the hill station, drawing visitors and locals alike to explore a diverse range of handcrafted goods from various rural artisans.

Speaking at the inauguration, CM Banerjee praised the efforts of local artisans and encouraged the promotion of indigenous crafts and culture. The fair, which is set to continue for several days, is expected to boost tourism and provide an important platform for the rural economy in the region.

Following the inauguration, the Chief Minister is scheduled to conclude a two-day tour of the hills, with plans to return to Kolkata via Siliguri on Thursday, November 14. After her return, Mamata Banerjee will attend a special function at Adivasi Bhavan in Rajarhat on Friday, November 15, to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of the legendary tribal leader, Birsa Munda.

In a significant administrative development, Mamata Banerjee also announced the formation of a new committee to supervise the activities of the Bone Development Boards in the Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts. The committee will be headed by Anit Thapa, the chairman of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), and Lal Bahadur Rai, the mayor of Mirik Municipality, will serve as the vice chairman.

The formation of this committee comes in response to growing concerns over the efficiency and execution of development activities in the region. Sources from Navanna revealed that the committee will be responsible for ensuring that developmental projects are carried out in a timely and transparent manner, addressing longstanding concerns regarding administrative delays and corruption.

The Chief Minister’s visit to Darjeeling also brought to light growing frustrations surrounding the pace of development in the region. During an emergency meeting held on Tuesday afternoon at Richmond Hill, Mamata Banerjee convened with officials from the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) and representatives from the 17 hill development councils to address these concerns.

Angered by allegations of slowness and irregularities in the implementation of development schemes, CM Banerjee announced the reconstitution of several hill development councils. The reorganization aims to improve administrative efficiency, streamline decision-making, and accelerate progress on much-needed infrastructure projects across the hills. Mamata Banerjee emphasized the importance of faster execution of development work to ensure that the needs of the people in the region are met promptly.

The decision to restructure the councils and form the oversight committee is part of the Chief Minister’s ongoing efforts to address governance issues in the hills. “It is essential that we ensure administrative accountability and transparency in all development activities. The people of Darjeeling and Kalimpong deserve better, and we are committed to speeding up the process of change,” said Mamata Banerjee in a statement after the meeting.

The new committee is expected to begin its work immediately, with a clear mandate to monitor the execution of ongoing projects and resolve any administrative hurdles that have been impeding progress. The Chief Minister’s visit and subsequent decisions underscore her government’s commitment to improving governance and development in the hilly regions of West Bengal.

As Mamata Banerjee wraps up her visit to Darjeeling, the region faces a pivotal moment in terms of governance and development. With the launch of the 'Saras Mela' boosting local businesses and her decisive actions to address administrative shortcomings, the Chief Minister has set the stage for a more focused and efficient approach to the development of the hills. The coming weeks will reveal the extent to which these new measures will bring about meaningful change for the people of Darjeeling and Kalimpong.
