Death Toll Rises to 6 in Tragic Bus Accident Near Rangpo; 15 Injured
KalimNews, Ramphu (Sikkim), November 29, 2024 – The death toll from the horrific bus accident that occurred today near Rangpo has now risen to six. Among the deceased, two victims are from Sikkim, one from Samsing, another from Kolkata, and one from Siliguri. One body remains unidentified and is currently lying at STNM Hospital, Gangtok.
The bus, Quality, was en route from Siliguri to Gangtok when it veered off the road and plunged into a ravine near Andheri, between Bhotey Bhir and Atal Bridge, under the jurisdiction of Lava Police Station. The incident took place around 3:00 PM on the treacherous mountain stretch of NH 10. Initial reports had indicated five fatalities, but the toll was updated after recovery efforts continued through the afternoon.
Local authorities confirmed that at least 15 others were injured in the crash, with many being workers employed in various companies across the region. T
The accident occurred on a narrow, winding section of the road, and eyewitnesses suggest that poor road conditions may have contributed to the bus losing control. Teams from the West Bengal Police, Rangpo Police, Sikkim Police, and Civil Defence Rangpo were joined by members of the Teesta Rangit Rescue Team, Rangpo Taxi Drivers Association and local residents.
The bus was carrying a mix of local passengers and travelers heading to Gangtok, and while the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation.
The condition of several injured passengers remains critical, and some have been transferred to higher medical centers for specialized care. One of the bodies at Rangpo Hospital is yet to be identified, further adding to the complexity of the situation.
