Bengal Braces for Temperature Dip as Weather Shifts: Cooler Days Ahead : Hills may expect light rains
Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, 3 Nov 2024, Kolkata : The Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore has issued a forecast indicating a noticeable dip in temperatures across Bengal over the next few days, signaling a shift from the unusually warm conditions that have characterized the region recently.
As of now, the minimum temperature in Kolkata stands at 24.2 degrees Celsius, which is two degrees above the seasonal average, while the maximum reaches 31.6 degrees Celsius, slightly higher than usual. However, meteorologists predict a decline of 2-3 degrees Celsius in temperatures for both North and South Bengal.
The IMD office in Alipore confirmed, “The temperature will drop by a degree or two in districts of Bengal in the next two days.” For residents of Kolkata, this means preparing for cooler conditions, especially with the approach of November, a month traditionally marked by a gradual drop in temperatures.
In North Bengal, areas such as Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, and Alipurduar can expect scattered light rain through November 6, which could contribute to the cooling effect. Additionally, Cooch Behar and surrounding districts are also forecasted to experience scattered rainfall on November 6.
Interestingly, October was recorded as the warmest month in 73 years for the national capital, with Kolkata experiencing its own warm spell. On November 1, the city recorded a minimum temperature of 26.2 degrees Celsius, defying typical patterns for this time of year. The persistent warmth has been attributed to significant moisture incursion from the sea, which has kept nighttime temperatures elevated and led to discomfort due to high humidity levels.
Typically, by late October, residents look forward to a slight chill in the air, especially around Diwali, prompting the use of light woolens. However, this year has seen temperatures in major regions including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat remaining above 20 degrees Celsius, which is higher than the historical norm for this period.
Weather experts note that a weak western disturbance affecting northern mountainous areas has temporarily stalled the natural cooling process. Once this weather system moves away, a more substantial drop in temperatures is anticipated, marking the onset of the cooler months ahead.
As Bengal prepares for these changes, residents are advised to stay updated with weather forecasts and adjust their clothing accordingly for the impending chill.
