The unfortunate incident occurred while the pilgrims were en route to the Yast Gaur Nath Mahadev temple, carrying holy water from the Ganges at Sultanganj for the Kanwar Yatra. Eyewitness reports indicate that the pilgrims were struck by a vehicle driven recklessly, leading to devastating consequences.
In the aftermath of the accident, an agitated mob set fire to a police van, reflecting the community's anger and frustration. According to police sources, the pilgrims were on their way to the Mahadev temple when the car collided with them. Law enforcement arrived at the scene shortly after receiving reports of the incident but faced a hostile crowd that had gathered to protest.
Divisional Magistrate Avinash Kumar provided an update, stating, "Upon receiving information, we proceeded to the site. Ten to eleven individuals were injured in the accident and have been taken to the hospital. We have confirmed the deaths of four people, and their bodies have been sent for post-mortem. An investigation into the incident is underway."
As tensions rose in the area following the accident, the police acted quickly to restore order. The local Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) confirmed that additional police forces have been deployed at the accident site to maintain peace and ensure public safety.
