Tensions Rise Over Land Dispute at Bharat Sevashram Sangh Ashram in Mahishadal
Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 30, 2024, Midnapore : A longstanding land dispute has erupted at the Bharat Sevashram Sangh ashram in Mahishadal, East Midnapore, drawing attention to the institution's significant role in the community since its establishment in 1953 by Param Pujya Srimat Swami Muktanandi Maharaja. The ashram has historically been a beacon of hope, providing education, primary medical services, and relief efforts for those affected by natural disasters.
Originally founded to promote education and support for underprivileged boys, the ashram established a non-paying primary school, which was later taken over by the West Bengal government in 1974. Over the years, the ashram has also opened a private school and an Industrial Training Institute (ITI) to further enhance local educational opportunities.
Despite these contributions, tensions escalated when the ashram began utilizing its open space for parking vehicles related to its various programs. This has led to confrontations with some staff from the nearby government primary school, who, reportedly incited by local community members, have sought to damage the vehicles and gate of the ashram. Claims of intimidation have surfaced, with accusations directed at the ashram regarding the use of this shared space.
In addition to the current conflict, the ashram has recently undertaken initiatives to repair a canal that was severely damaged by heavy rains. However, these efforts faced significant opposition from the primary school, which has claimed that any renovations in front of the ashram are unwelcome.
Local residents have expressed concern over the increasing hostilities, urging for dialogue and cooperation to resolve the issues amicably. The ashram remains committed to its mission of social service, continuing its free medical camps, blanket distribution, and tree plantation drives throughout the year.
As the situation develops, community leaders and stakeholders are calling for a peaceful resolution to ensure that the ashram can continue its vital work without interference, fostering an environment of unity and support in Mahishadal
