Suspended CPM Leader Tanmoy Bhattacharya Questioned Over Molestation Complaint, Controversial Remarks Spark Outrage
Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 31, 2024, Kolkata : Suspended CPM leader Tanmoy Bhattacharya appeared for questioning at Baranagar police station on Wednesday, facing allegations of molestation made by a woman who previously visited his residence for a professional engagement. Bhattacharya, who has refuted the allegations, spent approximately four hours with police officials and has been summoned again on November 6 for further questioning.
The complaint, filed on Sunday, alleges that Bhattacharya engaged in inappropriate behavior during the woman's visit, reportedly sitting on her lap and making unwelcome advances. The complainant provided a formal statement before a magistrate on Tuesday, further detailing her accusations and stating that Bhattacharya had allegedly made similar advances in the past.
Bhattacharya, who was swiftly suspended from the CPM following the allegations, has denied any misconduct, questioning why an interview he gave prior to the incident has yet to air, implying that it would provide critical context. Speaking to reporters after leaving the police station, he stated, "I will come whenever you call me," and questioned, “I was interviewed, so why hasn’t that interview been shown yet?” He maintained that airing the interview would clarify his position and allow the public to "understand everything."
In a move that has generated additional controversy, Bhattacharya dismissed the plausibility of the allegations by referencing the weight difference between himself and the complainant, saying, “The lady who made the complaint appears to weigh around 40kg, while I am 83kg. Just imagine, if a person of 83kg sits on someone who is 40kg, would that person remain physically fit?” This remark, which he later attributed to his wife’s words, sparked further public outrage and criticism from women’s rights groups and social activists, who condemned it as insensitive and dismissive of the gravity of the allegations.
According to a senior officer at the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate, Bhattacharya was questioned about the specifics of his interactions with the complainant, including details of the incident date and other past encounters she described. The allegations were initially made public by the complainant through a Facebook Live broadcast, after which she filed a formal complaint with the Barrackpore police.
In a statement expressing discontent with his suspension from the CPM, Bhattacharya said, “The team has suspended me without any investigation. I have accepted the team’s decision, but I am saddened because they did not speak with me or conduct an inquiry before suspending me.”
The case has drawn attention from the public, sparking debates on handling allegations of misconduct within political organizations. The CPM has remained firm in its decision to suspend Bhattacharya, stating that the matter requires a thorough investigation.
With Bhattacharya’s next police appearance scheduled for November 6, the investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to clarify the facts surrounding the case. The incident has underscored concerns regarding the accountability of public figures and the need for swift and transparent handling of misconduct allegations.
