Supreme Court Grants Three More Weeks for Investigation in RG Kar Case, Questions Task Force Efficiency

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 15, 2024, Kolkata: In the sixth hearing of the high-profile RG Kar case, the Supreme Court closely scrutinized the progress of the ongoing investigation into both the financial corruption and the rape-murder case connected to RG Kar Medical College. A bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Mishra began the hearing at 2:30 PM on Tuesday, questioning the central agencies involved in the case.

At the start of the hearing, an affidavit detailing the formation and actions of a task force was submitted to the court. Chief Justice Chandrachud immediately inquired about the progress of the investigation, specifically asking the central agency for an update on the status of the case. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the central agency, submitted a status report to the three-judge bench, which was carefully reviewed during the proceedings.

Solicitor General Mehta informed the court that the central agency’s officials have maintained regular contact with the families of the victims in the RG Kar rape-murder case, and a nodal officer has been appointed to ensure ongoing communication. Despite this, Chief Justice Chandrachud expressed concern over the pace of the investigation into financial corruption at the hospital, asking for specific details on the progress made so far.

In response, the central agency acknowledged that more time was needed to complete the investigation. Taking this into account, the Supreme Court granted the agency an additional three weeks to further its inquiries. The bench made it clear, however, that they expect significant progress by the next hearing.

The Supreme Court also focused on the functioning of the task force established to oversee various aspects of the case. The three-judge bench asked pointed questions about the task force’s actions, particularly when the last meeting was held and why it had not convened more regularly. Solicitor General Mehta admitted that the task force's last meeting took place on September 9 and explained that subsequent meetings were delayed because the secretary was on leave.

This explanation did not satisfy Chief Justice Chandrachud, who emphasized the importance of regular meetings for the task force to ensure that the investigation proceeds efficiently. He directed that the task force must meet consistently going forward and complete its assigned tasks within the next three weeks.

In a related development, the Solicitor General mentioned that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had recently presented the first charge sheet in the Sealdah court regarding the doctor’s rape and murder case linked to RG Kar. The status report submitted by the central agency during today’s hearing included references to this charge sheet, marking a critical step in the legal proceedings surrounding the tragedy.

The case has drawn national attention, particularly after the horrific incident involving the young doctor, which triggered widespread protests from junior doctors and healthcare professionals across Kolkata. Alongside this, allegations of financial irregularities within RG Kar Medical College have added another layer of complexity to the investigation.

With the Supreme Court now pushing for quicker progress, and the central agency given three more weeks to advance its probe, all eyes remain on the judicial process. The task force and investigating agencies face growing pressure to resolve these issues, which have not only impacted the medical community but also raised significant concerns about systemic corruption and safety in public healthcare institutions.
