SANJAY AGARWAL, EOI, RANGPO, OCTOBER 9, 2024 : A massive landslide at the 20th Mile between Majhitar and Singtam on Tuesday night caused the closure of National Highway 10 for over nine hours, severely disrupting traffic on this key route.
The landslide, triggered by heavy rainfall, blocked the road at about 11 pm on Tuesday. The authorities quickly deployed machinery to clear the debris, allowing for one-way traffic to resume around 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
Despite efforts to restore normality, however, a traffic snarl prevailed throughout the day, causing major inconvenience to commuters and transporters. In addition to the NH-10 blockage, two major state highways were also affected by landslides.
The Singtam-Yangang Road and the Namchi-Rangpo routes were closed due to landslides caused by the same heavy rainfall.
However, prompt action was taken, and machines were engaged to clear the debris. By late Wednesday afternoon, both state highways were reopened, allowing traffic to flow once again. The sudden downpour and subsequent landslides have highlighted the vulnerability of the Sikkim Himalayas to natural disruptions, particularly during the monsoon.
Local authorities have been on high alert, closely monitoring weather conditions and ensuring that road-clearing operations continue efficiently to avoid further blockages.
While the roads have been reopened, travelers have been advised to exercise caution and stay updated on traffic advisories as weather conditions remain unpredictable.
