Union Cabinet Approves 'One Nation, One Vote' Bill: Aiming for Simultaneous Elections

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, 18 September 2024, New Delhi : In a significant move, the Union Cabinet convened on Wednesday and approved the 'One Nation, One Vote' proposal, which aims to synchronize elections across various tiers of government. This proposal will be introduced as a bill during the upcoming winter session of Parliament.

Cabinet sources revealed that the initiative is designed to enhance the pace of development in India while minimizing election-related expenditures. The proposal suggests that simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies, such as municipalities and panchayats, would not only reduce costs but also ensure that developmental activities remain uninterrupted.

The government argues that holding these elections in phases over a span of 100 days would lead to substantial savings. Proponents, primarily from the ruling BJP, believe that this initiative is crucial for streamlining governance and maintaining developmental momentum. The BJP has championed the 'One Nation, One Vote' concept for several years, gaining traction especially since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's second term began.

A high-powered committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind was established to explore the feasibility of this proposal. The committee submitted its findings to President Droupadi Murmu in March, incorporating feedback from a range of stakeholders, including political parties, judges, lawyers, the Election Commission, and constitutional experts.

However, the proposal faces substantial opposition, with 15 political parties—including the main opposition party, Congress—voicing their concerns. They argue that the initiative could undermine the democratic process and the autonomy of local governance.

To implement the 'One Nation, One Vote' policy, a constitutional amendment is necessary, requiring a two-thirds majority in Parliament. Currently, the BJP and its allies do not possess this level of support, and amendments must also pass through state and union assemblies.

Critics point out that while simultaneous elections may reduce costs, they could also stifle local representation and decision-making. Moreover, the period between the announcement of elections and their conclusion sees a freeze on government policy decisions, potentially hindering essential development work.

As the proposal advances to Parliament, it will be crucial to observe how it navigates the complex landscape of political consensus and constitutional requirements in a diverse and democratic India.
