Stolen Items Recovered from Former Telangana Deputy Chief Minister's House, Two Arrested in Kharagpur
Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, September 27, 2024, West Medinipur : In a major breakthrough, the Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested two individuals at Kharagpur railway station, recovering stolen valuables worth approximately ₹20 lakh. The recovered items include gold biscuits, cash, US dollars, Kuwaiti dinars, and silver articles. The arrests were made during a special drive conducted by the GRP when the Bhubaneswar-Howrah Jan Shatabdi Express arrived at platform number 7 on Thursday.
The two accused, identified as Uday Kumar Thakur and Roshan Kumar Mondal, were apprehended after exhibiting suspicious behavior. Upon searching their belongings, police discovered the stolen items, later identified as loot from a high-profile burglary at the home of former Telangana Congress Deputy Chief Minister, Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka.
The theft, which occurred while Vikramarka was abroad, was orchestrated by Roshan Kumar Mondal, the son of a domestic worker employed at the politician’s residence. Hailing from Bihar, Mondal collaborated with his friend, Uday Kumar Thakur, to carry out the burglary. Seizing the opportunity while the former deputy chief minister was away, they looted gold, foreign currency, cash, and silver articles from the house.
According to SRP Debashree Sanyal, the GRP had been conducting a special operation at Kharagpur station when they noticed the suspicious behavior of the two accused. Upon detaining and searching them, police discovered the stolen items. The subsequent investigation confirmed that the recovered valuables were part of the loot from the burglary at Vikramarka's residence in Telangana.
Sanyal confirmed, "A few days ago, there was a high-profile theft at the residence of the former Deputy Chief Minister of Telangana. While our investigation was ongoing, we arrested these two individuals during a routine operation. The stolen items, including gold, foreign currency, and silver, were recovered from their possession."
Following the arrests, the Telangana Police have been notified of the recovery. It is expected that the two accused will be transferred to Telangana for further investigation. The burglary case had already triggered a wide-scale investigation, and the arrests in West Bengal mark a significant development.
Both Uday Kumar Thakur and Roshan Kumar Mondal were presented in court on Friday, where multiple charges have been filed against them. Authorities are continuing their investigation, looking into whether the duo was involved in other thefts or whether additional accomplices were part of the heist.
The recovery of these stolen items highlights the efficiency of the GRP’s special drive, which has now led to the unraveling of a multi-state crime. The case underscores the importance of inter-state coordination between law enforcement agencies, which played a pivotal role in recovering the stolen goods and apprehending the suspects.
