Status of NH 10 Uncertain: Road Closed Near Birrik Danra; Public Advised to Avoid NH 10

Don't Miss

KalimNews, 27 September 2024, Kalimpong: Due to landslides and falling boulders, the status of NH 10 remains highly uncertain. Currently, continuous rockfall near Birrik Danra has led to the closure of NH 10 as a safety measure. The Kalimpong Traffic Police, District Administration, and PWD have collectively advised commuters to use alternative routes.

This morning, the water level in the Teesta River rose as NHPC (TLDP III & IV) released water downstream to prevent further increases. A general caution was issued to the public in areas adjacent to the river. A general alert has also been issued for those near the Teesta River and for those using NH 10.

At present, the Teesta water level is below the road bench at Teesta Bazar, so the route to Darjeeling via Peshok is open. While NH 10 is now open to traffic, the public is advised to avoid the highway unless absolutely necessary due to ongoing rains and the potential for further landslides.

Balsubramanian T, the District Magistrate, has issued an advisory stating that NH 10 is temporarily closed until debris is cleared and the route is deemed safe for travel. With a heavy rain warning in effect for today and tomorrow, the public is strongly advised to avoid using NH 10, even if it reopens, unless in cases of dire emergency.

Motorists are urged to exercise caution while driving on roads vulnerable to landslides. It is recommended to gather official, confirmed local information before making any travel plans during this period.
