Central Government Plans Changes to Agnipath Recruitment Scheme

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, September 5, 2024: The Modi government is planning to introduce changes to the Agnipath recruitment scheme, along with modifications to the central government pension scheme. The proposed changes may include adjustments to salary increments and entitlements for those recruited under the Agnipath scheme, in addition to retaining more firefighters (Agniveers). The aim of these changes is to improve the infrastructure and facilities of the entire recruitment system.

However, the government has faced criticism from the opposition for these proposed changes. Youth aspiring to join the armed forces have also expressed their dissatisfaction, leading to protests against the central government's plans.

Currently, only 25 percent of Agniveers are retained after their initial four-year service period. Military experts argue that this number is insufficient and suggest that the retention rate should be increased to 50 percent. The army has submitted its recommendations for these changes to the central government. Top Army officials have stated that any steps to improve the Agnipath scheme will require more time to implement.

Under the current Agnipath scheme, recruitment to the Air Force, Navy, and Army is done on four-year short-term contracts. Of those recruited annually, only 25 percent are allowed to continue their service under a new commission.

Regarding this, army aspirants have voiced concerns about their future, stating, "The future of those who leave the service after four years is uncertain." Protests have erupted in various places over these concerns from aspiring soldiers. The opposition, meanwhile, is advocating for a return to the previous recruitment scheme.
