Tragic Road Accident in Sikkim Results in Loss of 4 Soldiers

PTI, GANGTOK, SEPTEMBER 5, 2024 : Four Army personnel lost their lives in a tragic road accident in Sikkim's Pakyong district on Thursday, police reported. The incident involved a vehicle carrying personnel from the Army's EME (Electronics and Mechanical Engineers) Corps, who were stationed at Binnaguri in West Bengal.

According to the police, the accident occurred at Vertical Bhir along the Rhenock-Rongli highway when the Army vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a deep forested gorge below. The treacherous terrain and sharp turns in the area are known to be challenging, and the vehicle's loss of control led to the fatal plunge.

All four occupants of the vehicle died on the spot due to the impact of the crash. Emergency responders, including local police and Army personnel, rushed to the scene to conduct rescue operations. The bodies of the deceased soldiers were later recovered from the wreckage.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident could have been caused by poor visibility and slippery road conditions following recent rains in the region. However, further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident. The identities of the soldiers have not yet been released, pending notification of their families.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Army community and among the residents of the area, who have expressed their condolences to the bereaved families. The Army has also issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss of its brave soldiers and has assured that all necessary support will be provided to the families of the deceased.

This tragic accident is a stark reminder of the risks faced by Army personnel, not only in conflict zones but also during their routine duties in difficult terrains.
