Siliguri Road Accident Claims Six Lives


Prashant Acharya, EOI, Siliguri, August 12, 2024 : Six people were killed and two others injured in a road accident along the Bagdogra-Kolkata Highway near Moone Tea Garden at Bagdogra on Monday morning when a Scorpio vehicle ploughed into a group of devotees who were walking towards the Junglee Baba Mandir at Bagdogra to offer puja on the last Monday of Shravan. 
Angry protesters from the neighboring villages blocked the highway for around one hour to protest against the accident. 
Those killed were identified as: Amanesh Roy Choudhary (20), Govinda Roy Choudhary (25), Himesh Roy Choudhary (14), Pralahad Roy (35, civic volunteer), Kanak Barman (23), and Pranab Roy (24). 

The accident occurred at around 6 AM. The speeding vehicle knocked down the devotees after hitting 14 concrete guard pillars and uprooting a traffic signal board. Then it fell into a ditch. 
The group of 10 devotees hailed from the villages of Gokul Jote near Haskhowa Tea Estate and Danagachh. 
Three of those killed were from the same family, residents of Gokul Jote. The others were residents of Danagachh. Jagannath Roy, Pradhan of Hetmuri Singhiajhora Gram Panchayat, said that it was an unfortunate and sad incident for two entire villages. 
Local leaders, including the Sabhadhipati of Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad and the BDO of Phansidewa, went to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital to offer their support to the grieving families.
