Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang Unveils New Indreni Bridge over Teesta River, Built in Record Time by BRO
Don't Miss
KalimNews (with inputs from PIB), 12 Aug 2024, Singtam : In a significant development for Sikkim’s infrastructure, Prem Singh Tamang, Chief Minister of Sikkim, inaugurated the new 300-foot Bailey Suspension Bridge over the Teesta River today. The bridge, constructed by Project Swastik of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), was completed in record time, marking a crucial milestone in the state's recovery efforts following recent natural disasters.
During the inauguration ceremony held in Singtam, Chief Minister Tamang emphasized that his government’s top priority is to restore road connectivity and provide relief in the wake of the catastrophic flash floods that struck Sikkim on October 4, 2023. These floods caused severe damage to the road network and several bridges, isolating the northern and southern regions of the state from the rest of the country.
Tamang praised the BRO for its pivotal role in the economic and infrastructure development of Sikkim. “The role of BRO in the restoration and development of infrastructure is commendable,” he stated. “Their swift response and effective execution have been crucial in our efforts to rebuild and recover.”
The Indreni Bridge was destroyed in the devastating floods, exacerbating the disruption caused by the natural disaster. Recognizing the urgent need to restore connectivity, the Government of Sikkim promptly issued orders to expedite the construction of suspension Bailey bridges. A joint survey with GRSE (Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd) led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the bridge's construction.
With all necessary land approvals and clearances in place, Project Swastik began work on the new bridge in mid-May. Remarkably, the abutments were completed by July 30, and the bridge’s superstructure was finished within just 10 days. This efficient execution underscores the BRO’s capability and commitment to addressing critical infrastructure needs swiftly.
The inauguration of the Indreni Bridge is a key achievement in the ongoing recovery from the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) tragedy. By reconnecting South and East Sikkim, the bridge will facilitate enhanced economic and social development in the Namchi region and beyond.
Senior dignitaries from the state administration and officials from Project Swastik of BRO attended the inauguration, celebrating this crucial development. The successful completion of the Indreni Bridge exemplifies the motto of the BRO: “In the Silence of Our Great Mountains, the work of BRO speaks.”
This new bridge is expected to play a vital role in improving connectivity and supporting the recovery and growth of Sikkim’s communities, reinforcing the state’s resilience in the face of natural calamities.
