RG Kar accused’s bike is registered in commissioner’s name? Calcutta top cop clears the air
Calcutta police commissioner Vineet Goyal denies TV report that implied Sanjay Roy, the lone person arrested in the RG Kar rape and murder case, enjoyed special privileges
Arnab Ganguly, TT, Calcutta, 27.08.24 : Calcutta police commissioners Vineet Goyal on Tuesday denied a television report that implied Sanjay Roy, the lone person arrested in the RG Kar rape and murder case, enjoyed special privileges because his bike was registered in the name of the top cop.
The Telegraph Online asked Goyal about the allegation.
“All KP [Kolkata Police] vehicles are registered in the name of Commissioner of Police,” Goyal replied via text message.
According to the TV news report, the bike was registered with the Regional Transport Office in Beltala Road in May 2014. The bike has been seized by the CBI which has started a probe into the case following an order by the Calcutta High Court two weeks ago.
Asked whether all civic volunteers have access to Calcutta police vehicles, Goyal did not answer.
The rape and murder of the 31-year old postgraduate trainee at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital – currently being probed by the CBI – has raised a barrage of questions.
In 2019, Roy had joined the Calcutta Police’s disaster management group but later used his contacts in the police to switch to the welfare cell.
He was posted at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital as a guard. It granted him access to the wards. Some of the ex-students had earlier told The Telegraph Online that he worked at the hospital as a cook for some time before disappearing for a few years.
It has been alleged that Roy received five litres of free fuel daily and was also living at the premises of the Calcutta police’s Fourth Battalion.
Roy was accused of assaulting his pregnant wife in 2022 and also extortion, intimidation of women. Last October he was accused of misbehaving with the on-duty doctors at the trauma ward in a drunken state, though neither the police nor the hospital authorities took any action against him.
Reportedly, Roy had initially confessed to the RG Kar rape and murder. However when he was taken for the polygraph test he reportedly claimed he had been framed and was innocent.
Apart from Roy neither the Calcutta Police nor the CBI has made any arrests in connection with the rape and the murder of the young doctor.
Roy was caught on CCTV outside the building where the murder took place and a Bluetooth operated earphone that belonged to him was recovered from near the body.
The accused has claimed that he did go to the room but left as soon as he saw the body of doctor lying on a blue mattress in the seminar hall, where she had retired after a 36-hour long stint.
“The presence of the earphone only indicates he was present at the room at some point of time. Does not connect him to the rape and murder. More evidence is required for that,” a former police officer told The Telegraph Online on Monday.
