Kolkata mob violence suspects

Ajay Kumar, TNN, Aug 15, 2024, Kolkata News : Amid the ongoing probe and row over violence at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where a trainee doctor was raped and murdered, the Kolkata police has now arrested nine people for attack on the hospital.
This comes after the cops released several photos showing faces of people who were part of the mob which vandalised the hospital. The incident happened during women's midnight protests when a crowd apparently not part of the peaceful protest, began throwing things inside hospital's emergency room.
They broke doors, beds, windows, and damaged the CCTV cameras as well. The mob left a scene of devastation behind them with women blaming police for lack of security.
"Information wanted: Anyone who can help identify the individuals circled in red in the images below is requested to do so, either directly to us or through your local PS," the Facebook post of Kolkata police read.
The protest was not limited to Kolkata as doctors and students in Delhi, Mumbai and other cities also held an agitation. The unidentified miscreants forcibly entered the premises of the state government-run medical college and carried out vandalism.
The cops said a group of nearly 40 people, allegedly disguised as protestors, entered the hospital and began vandalising property. They also hurled stones at police personnel after which officials fired teargas to disperse the mob.
The said that a police vehicle and a few two-wheelers at the spot were also damaged in the incident.
Kolkata Police chief Vineet Goyal, who reached the hospital around 2 am, accused the media of running a "malicious campaign".
"I am telling you from the core of my heart, from every member of the team, that we have not tried to save anyone. We are a responsible force, we can't destroy evidence just like that," the chief defended his team.
