Siliguri youth loses Rs 1.23 lakh in fake online shopping : Doctor of Sikkim duped by Whats App group loses Rs 5.07 lakh

EOI, SILIGURI, JULY 18, 2024 :  A young man from the Rathkhola area Siliguri has fallen victim to cyber fraud while ordering goods from an online shopping app, losing Rs 1.23 lakh. The victim, 18-year-old Abhirup Roy, had initially ordered a watch and purse worth Rs 2,100.According to reports, Abhirup placed his order last Sunday. 

Later, on Tuesday, he received a call purportedly from the online shopping app, informing him that cash on delivery was not available for his order, and he needed to make an advance payment.

The caller sent him a QR code for the payment. Upon scanning the QR code, Rs 1.23 lakh was lost from Abhirup’s bank account. Following the incident, Abhirup Roy filed a written complaint at the Cyber Crime Police Station. The cyber team has initiated an investigation into the case. 

Doctor duped to invest in fake stock investment, loses Rs 5.07 lakh .

SUJAL PRADHAN, GANGTOK, JULY 18, 2024 : A case of fraud has been registered at Sadar Police Station against unknown persons for duping a Gangtok-based doctor of Rs 5.07 lakh in a fake stock investment scheme. 

The resident of Daragoan, Tadong, filed a complaint on July 17 stating that he had been added to a WhatsApp group without his consent. 

The group's admins recommended stocks and convinced him to invest. A case has been registered under sections 419/420 IPC, 1860, and Sec 66D of IT Act2000, and is currently under investigation. The police are investigating the matter and have appealed to anyone with information about the fake scheme to come forward.
