Portion of NH 10collapses into river Teesta at 21st Mile
YOWAN MOTHAY, EOI, KALIMPONG, JULY 12, 2024 : The condition of National Highway 10 is becoming worse by the day. After the rains on Thursday night, half of the road on a stretch at 21st Mile collapsed and fell into the river.
It has been more than 10 days that NH 10 is closed. A few days ago the District Magistrate of Kalimpong had said that it would take seven to 10 days to open NH 10 but now it appears that it may take 15 to 20 days to open the road to traffic.
Even if the road is open to traffic, the risk of landslides will be high on the way. The PWD is trying to open the road by back-cutting and cleaning the road. the road from Ravi Jhora to Darjeeling is often flooded.
Even on Friday, the traffic remained at a standstill after this route became flooded in the afternoon.
Vehicles coming from Darjeeling to Kalimpong had to face long traffic jams. With the prolonged closure of the NH 10, the prices of essentials have shot up and there is a shortage of petrol and diesel in petrol pumps in the area.
Some of the petrol pumps are issuing petrol and diesel only during an emergency.
