
Greed and fear helping cyber fraud to flourish

EOI, GANGTOK, JULY 15, 2024 : To raise awareness about cybercrime and cyberfraud among common people, the Gangtok District Police held a news conference on Monday. Senior Superintendent of Police of Gangtok District Tenzing Loden Lepcha announced that the police would now hold a press conference every two weeks to inform common people about various cyber frauds happening in Sikkim and ways to avoid them.
He said that most of these frauds occurred by enticing people with false promises. Lepcha estimated that victims of cyber fraud in Sikkim had lost amounts ranging from Rs 40 lakh to Rs 4 crore.
The primary factors contributing to the rise in cyber fraud in the state were greed and fear. He pointed out that fraudsters often lured people with tempting offers, which had led to the highest number of such incidents
