Rise of AI in 2023 & 2024- expectation in near future
Tamanna Biswas, EOI, 23 June 2024 : With the coming of the 21st century, the entire world has become the witness of intense transformation in all areas such as education, global trade, the economy, technology, and society. Today, the world is thriving on technology. And AI or Artificial Intelligence is the biggest technological revolution of the 21st century. It has the potential to shatter almost every aspect of human existence. AI is a section of computer science that intends to form intelligent machines and tools that are programmed to think like humans and mimic their actions. It involves the same traits to be present in the machines which are knowledge, reasoning, problem solving, perceptions, learning, planning and the ability to manipulate and move objects. It’s the hindrance of human intelligence processes by machines based on computer systems.
1950—this is where it all started. A question roused the mind of a computer scientist: "Are there imaginable digital computers that would do well in the imitation game?” After that the term Artificial Intelligence was coined by John McCarthy, who is extensively known as the father of AI, as part of his proposal for the 1956 Dartmouth Conference. In the same year the very first AI lab was established by MIT. In 1975, the first powerful use case of AI was seen. MYCIN was exhibited by Stanford University, which helped physicians to identify bacterial infections such as meningitis. It had outstretched a new horizon in the world of medical sciences. Since, AI research has made significant progress, leading to the development of many practical applications.
One of the earliest successful applications of AI was the progression of expert systems, which are computer programs that are designed to mimic the decision-making abilities of human experts. Another momentous development in AI was the creation of artificial neural networks which are computer programs that are designed to simulate the way the human brain functions.
These networks are used in a huge range of applications, including image and speech recognition, natural language processing, and even playing games like chess and also used to recognize patterns, classify data, and make decisions based on the data they have been trained on. In the 1980s and 1990s, AI experienced a resurgence in popularity, thanks in part to the development of machine learning algorithms. These kinds of algorithms have been used in a wide range of applications, including language translation and fraud detection. In 1987, a second drop of interest and investments hit AI. In 1996, the world chess champion was beaten by IBM’s chess-playing computer. In 2002, a big decision was taken by Amazon about the replacement of human editors with the basics of AI systems, and it also led the path in an arguable manner in showing how AI could be beneficial for their business. In the same year, Apple introduced Siri which is the first voice based conversational interface. In 2016, AI moved to the next level of competency because Google’s AlphaGo AI machine beat the world champion of ‘Go’, the world’s most difficult strategy game.
In recent years, AI has continued to advance at a rapid pace. in 2018, SEER was invented. SEER (Simulative Emotional Expression Robot) is an animatronic humanoid robot that can generate gaze and emotional facial expressions to improve animativity, lifelikeness, and impressiveness by the integrated design of modeling, mechanism, materials, and computing. One of the most significant developments in AI in recent years has been the rise of deep learning, which is a type of machine learning that is based on artificial neural networks with many layers. Deep learning has been used to achieve state-of-the-art results in a great range of applications, including natural language processing, and self-driving cars.
At the start of 2021, the invention of DALL-E is one of the biggest achievements in the field of AI. It’s a neural network that can generate images from captions in the texts and it was created by open AI. Automation is in the list of the next biggest AI achievements in 2021. It is a brain computer interface that looks after our brain activity. In the year of 2023, Gemini was announced by Google. It’s a LLM created by subsidiary Google Deep Mind, during the Google I/O keynote and currently available in multiple languages and more than 150 countries. The Google Gemini models are used for different purposes, including text, image, audio and video understanding. The multimodal nature of Gemini also helps these different types of input to be combined for generating output. It was predicted that by 2024, AI will be integral to every part of the business including healthcare, finance, and transportations, resulting in 25% of the overall spend on AI Solutions. And these predictions have become true. It is believed by some experts that AI could potentially lead to the development of fully autonomous robots that will be able to perform tasks without human intervention.(The views of the author are personal) .
