Raju Bista requests Amit Shah to send Central team to see condition of people living along Teesta, condition of NH 10

YOWAN MOTHAY, PRASHANT ACHARYA, EOI, KALIMPONG, 26 JUNE 2024 :  In a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Wednesday, Darjeeling M.P. Raju Bista  mentioned  about  the  alarming situation faced by the people living along Teesta and about the precarious condition of National Highway 10.
Bista requested the Home Minister to depute a Central team to investigate into the serious threat to people  living  along  the  banks  of  river Teesta.
Since the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood of October 2023, people in Teesta Bazar and adjoining places were living in dire condition but the West Bengal Government had done nothing to help them, he said.
The condition of river Teesta had worsened since then, due to which nearly 400 families in Darjeeling and Kalimpong had been is placed, he said.
He also informed Home Minister Shah that the part of NH-10 which was being looked after by the West Bengal PWD was still  not  normal.
Because  of  which  the highway connecting Kalimpong and Sikkim with Siliguri was frequently closed.
Bista requested the Home Minister to hand over this section of National Highway 10 directly to the National Highway Authority of  India or the National Highway and Infrastructure Development  Corporation.
NH  10,  he pointed out, was important from the point of view of national security and one of the most important border roads in the country.
Bista said that the Home Minister had assured him that the Centre was reviewing the   situation   and   that   all   necessary assistance and support would be provided.
He also said that he was confident that the Union Home Ministry would be able to address the needs of those affected by the river Teesta.
