Police teams in Sikkim and Bengal seize around Rs 42 lakh in cash from different locations on Sunday

 Probe is on to ascertain whether cash was supposed to be used to buy votes, Sikkim is set to vote for both Lok Sabha and Assembly elections on April 19

TT, Darjeeling/Alipurduar, 01.04.24 : Police teams in Sikkim and Bengal seized around Rs 42 lakh in cash from different locations on Sunday.

In Sikkim, the police intercepted a car at the check post in Melli. While checking the SUV, cops found Rs 32 lakh in cash inside it.

Probe is on to ascertain whether the cash was supposed to be used to buy votes. Sikkim is set to vote for both Lok Sabha and Assembly elections on April 19.

In Alipurduar, a police team posted at the checkpost in Pakriguri, which is on the Bengal-Assam border, intercepted a person with Rs 10 lakh in cash.

“He was traveling in a Siliguri-bound bus from Assam. We have taken him into custody to find out why he was carrying the money,” said a police officer.

ATM fraud cuffs

A 40-year-old man who hails from Ludhiana in Punjab has been arrested for allegedly siphoning off more than Rs 5 lakh from the ATM counter of a nationalised bank in Salt Lake, Calcutta. A team from the Bidhannagar Commissionerate arrested Johnny Goyal from near his home in Ludhiana on Friday.

A senior officer of the Bidhannagar Commissionerate said in September last year, they had received a complaint from the senior bank manager of the bank that has an ATM counter outside the branch.

The bank official had complained at the Bidhannagar East police station that they had discovered that Rs 5,23,500 had been fraudulently withdrawn from the ATM counter.
