Golay positions poll battle in Sikkim as ‘young vs old’
SUJAL PRADHAN, EOI, GANGTOK, 15 APRIL 2024 : Addressing a largely attended election meeting at Jorethang on Monday, Chief Minister of Sikkim Prem Singh Tamang positioned the ensuing assembly polls in Sikkim as a battle between the old and the new, symbolizing the Sikkim Democratic Front as an “old camera” and his own Sikkim Krantikari Morcha as ‘modern I-Phone.’
Golay, who is now 55, said his vision, dynamism and work ethic resonated with the vibrancy of youth.
By contrast, SDF leader Pawan Chamling was a relic of a bygone era, constrained by age and lethargy; symbolizing the stagnation inherent in the governance of the SDF.
"There are two options for Sikkim people," he said, "either an old man or a young politician." He urged citizens to eschew complacency and embrace the youthful energy and innovation embodied by the SKM.
Highlighting the accomplishments of his tenure, Golay said the transformative initiatives undertaken by the SKM government endeared his administration to the people of Sikkim. The past 25 years of SDF rule were a period of stagnation and unfulfilled pledges and it was futile to persist with promises, he said.
Accusing the SDF of resorting to divisive tactics, Golay cautioned against attempts to stoke communal discord. In the digital age the people of Sikkim were discerning and would not fall prey to such machinations, he said.
He said the ballot votes and the votes of government employees would determine the future governance of Sikkim. He outlined a comprehensive plan encompassing various sectors, from healthcare to entrepreneurship, promising a brighter and more prosperous future of the state.
He announced the “Matri Sukarksha Kavas Yojana,” an initiative to support pregnant women in Sikkim.
Under the scheme, pregnant women would receive essential vitamins; with the government providing financial assistance of Rs 21,000 to cover the cost.
Also, new mothers would be provided with baby kits to ensure the well-being of both mothers and newborns.
Self-help groups across every district of Sikkim would be empowered, with two women from each district appointed as chairpersons; promoting the active participation of women in decision-making.
The Chief minister also unveiled an “Invest Sikkim” plan, with the target of attracting $18 million in investments by 2035. This would establish Sikkim as a premier destination for investors, helping in job creation and economic growth.
The Chief Minister announced free transportation for college and school students in SNT buses. Free hostels for college students would beset up in every district, he said.
