The TAI (Tea Association of India) president Sandeep Singhania has appreciated the role of the West Bengal government to bring in development in the tea industry.

Addressing the 52nd Annual General Meeting of the TAI North Bengal Branch, at Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri, the president said, “The association has given a comprehensive representation to the government on the issue of issuance of homestead patta (deed of land rights) to the tea garden workers and I would hereby urge upon the state to take cognizance where there are genuine issues so that the policy execution of the government can go smoothly.”

Mr Singhania added, “This association welcomes the proactive steps taken by the West Bengal Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board to construct additional crèches and health centres in the north Bengal districts. The effort of the state in its initiative on Jal Jeevan Mission should be helpful to the Tea Garden population. The state government’s endeavour in promulgating schemes like Chai Sundari Prakalpo is a well-intentioned move.”

The policy decision particularly on the tea industry to engage in other business activities government notified under “Tea Tourism and allied Business Policy 2019” opens doors of diversification on garden lease hold land and is a liberal policy. “These initiatives reflect a commitment to the well-being and socio-economic development of tea garden workers, and we appreciate the government’s efforts in this regard,” he added.

“The TAI welcomes the announcement by the government in its latest Budget 2024-25 that the department of industry, commerce & enterprises has accorded approval to five eco-friendly projects at four tea gardens, generating investment to the tune of Rs 316.45 crore,” he added.

It may be mentioned here that the TAI has also served the representations to the government on the sustainability of the tea industry of north Bengal and for fiscal incentives to be provided to the tea gardens.

As the planters are in a tight spot, following reports on inferior quality of teas, which are unfit for human consumption, TAI president has pointed out that this association has been in constant touch with FSSAI officials and Tea Board in addressing industry-related concerns, particularly regarding MRL harmonization.
