Student unions resist CAA protest gag: Security beefed up around several campuses

Basant Kumar Mohanty, TT, New Delhi, 15.03.24 : Four student organisations on Thursday criticised the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government over the deployment of police on several campuses to deny students their rights to protest against the rules notified for implementing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students Association (BAPSA), All India Students Association (AISA), Students Islamic Organisation of India and the Fraternity Movement told reporters at a media conference in Delhi on Thursday that the CAA enacted in 2019 was a direct affront to the fundamental spirit of the Constitution.

The CAA seeks to relax norms for the grant of citizenship to persons belonging to six religions except Muslims from three neighbouring countries — Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

They have formed a Students Collective to spearhead agitations on campuses against the CAA and the rules.

Expecting protests, the Centre and the UP government have already deployed police on several campuses. Jamia Millia Islamia University has seen the deployment

of police personnel since Tuesday.

Similar security arrangements have been made on the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) campus. Some students were detained during the anti-CAA protests at Delhi University on Wednesday.
