GTA Principal Secretary asks for completion of Teesta guard wall by April

YOWAN MOTHAY, KALIMPONG, MARCH 19, 2024 : Principal Secretary of Gorkhaland Territorial Administration Soumya Purkait on Tuesday visited the flood affected areas in Teesta to take stock of the restoration and rehabilitation work being done by the GTA.
During the visit, he walked form Teesta Ravijhora to Teesta Bazar Gafoor Busty and inquired about the ground situation.
The Principal Secretary also inspected the condition of the National Highway and reviewed the work being done by the NHPC to erect a safety protection wall, and also the houses being constructed by the GTA for the flood victims.
The Principal Secretary issued strict instructions that the work of the safety protection wall being done by the NHPC with assistance from the GTA to save Teesta Bazar from the ravages of river Teesta again must be completed within the coming April, before the onset of monsoon.
The Principal Secretary asked the NHPC authorities to allocate sufficient funds for the construction of the guard wall made of reinforced cement concrete for the permanent protection of the area, as had already been decided.
The GTA had already conducted a survey of the Teesta area and submitted a report to the NHPC and recommended the measures necessary to ensure security of the area.
Residents of the area handed over to the Principal Secretary a memorandum on their requirements. GTA Executive Director Sonam Bhutia was present.
