Darjeeling Municipality plans to make queen of hill stations cleaner and greener
EOI, DARJEELING, MARCH 7, 2024 : The Darjeeling Municipality on Thursday inaugurated 72 projects worth Rs.8 crore for a better, cleaner and greener town.
Darjeeling Municipality chairman DipenThakuri and Vice Chairman Pratibha Rai Tamang inaugurated the multiple projects in the presence of ward councilors. The 72 projects will cover most of the 22 wards of the Darjeeling civic body.
"The projects include the setting up of 20 jhoras, constructing 54 community toilets and electrification of streets and lanes. This is the first phase of many more projects that we will bring to the hills," said Thakuri. The Municipality Chairman said it would benefit the people of the hills, keeping good rapport with the West Bengal government.
"We have been liaising with the State Government and have built a good relationship. This augurs well for the hills,"said Thakuri.
The Darjeeling Municipality is run by the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha party which also helms the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration. BGPM is an ally of the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. On the question of the timing of the inauguration of the projects with the Lok Sabha set to be announced, the Darjeeling Municipality chairman said his board worked for people and not for votes.
"We don't want to dwell on negative talks. We believe in positive thoughts and vision. I request people not to just criticize but to work together to make Darjeeling a better place," said Thakuri.
The projects both small and medium are expected to be completed within four to five months.
"We have several other projects lined up in the second phase. We have plans to make all the 32 wards of Darjeeling Municipality clean and beautiful. People will get to see how ourboard works and also witness the transformation of this place," said Thakuri.
