Town with a deserted look in evening, Kalimpong recalls days of Tibet trade on district formation anniversary
YOWAN MOTHAY, EOI, KALIMPONG, FEBRUARY 14, 2024 : The Eighth Foundation Day of Kalimpong district was observed in a function by the Kalimpong district administration on Wednesday.
Kalimpong was constituted in a district in 017, as the 21st district of West Bengal.
The district is headquartered at Kalimpong, which rose to prominence as a market town for Indo-Tibet trade during the British period.
After the formation of the district, both the Trinamool Congress and the Jan Andolan Party had claimed credit for it, which was a long-standing demand of the people of these hills.
On the occasion of the8th Foundation Day, District Magistrate of Kalimpong Balasubramaniam T was the chief guest on the occasion, held at the Treasury Conference Hall.
Kalimpong Municipality Chairman Ravi Pradhan, KalImpong District Superintendent of Police Srihari Pandey and Additional Superintendent of Police Siwanbhita were also present, along with founder of eco-tourism Sebastian Pradhan.
A book titled 'Kalimpong Call 2' was launched on the occasion. Ravi Pradhan gave credit for the formation of Kalimpong district to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and expressed his gratitude to her.
To turn Kalimpong into a tourist centre, it would be ensured that the town had more life in the evening. For tourists who would come to Kalimpong there was nowhere to go in the evening.
That’s why tourists did not spend much time in Kalimpong town and preferred destinations in rural areas where they enjoyed a different flavor.
To make the town of Kalimpong more attractive to tourists in the evening, there would be musical programmes from 5 p.m. to 9p.m. where regional artists would perform.
