Kalimpong CPI (M), Congress want son of soil as INDIA alliance candidate for Darjeeling LS seat

YOWAN MOTHAY, EOI, KALIMPONG, FEBRUARY 16, 2024 : CPI(M)leader of Kalimpong Tara Sundas and Congress leader Dilip Pradhan in a joint news conference on Friday said a son of the soil should be the candidate of the INDIA alliance for the Darjeeling constituency in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.
Sundas suggested as the possible candidate the names of Kalimpong MLA Ruden Sada Lepcha, advocate Amar Lama, educationist Mahendra P. Lama and former legislator Harka Bahadur Chhetri.
“The thinking of the CPI (M) is that whether it is assembly or Lok Sabha election, the candidates from the Darjeeling hills should be a local citizen, a person known in the hills and one who has done something for the hills. By electing outsiders as M.P. of the Darjeeling Lok Sabha constituency, the hill people have wasted about 20 to 25 years.
Dilip Pradhan said the candidate must be familiar with each village, including the tea gardens and the cinchona gardens. He had already spoken to the Congress high command that the candidate for the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat should be a son of the soil.
