YOWAN MOTHAY, EOI, KALIMPONG, JANUARY 28, 2024 : With a plan to build a second approach to Kalimpong town, MLA of Kalimpong Ruden Sada Lepcha, Gorkhaland Territorial Administration Executive Sabhasad Sinora Namchu and other officials of the district administration and the panchayat on Sunday carried out an inspection of the road connecting from Chandralok near Div Chowk to Six Miles, which is on the State Highway.
Since there is only one road for vehicles entering and exiting Kalimpong town, any major event held in Kalimpong leads to a traffic snarl.
Common people as well as drivers have to face a lot of problem. Lepcha said if a road could be constructed following the alignment, the problem of traffic jams in Kalimpong town would be reduced to a large extent.
He said he had already held meetings with the District Magistrate and other officials and the construction of the alternative route would start next year.
He said eight years ago the construction of a road from Sinclairs to Div Chawk had started, but since the land owners were not willing to donate land at that time the road construction work had to be postponed and a fund of Rs 2 crore was returned to the GTA. Land owners along the new alignment planned were willing to spare their plots for the road, he said
