Student abducted from college rescued in Manipur, 8 arrested

Police said the student was kidnapped from New Boy’s Hostel of DM College of Science in Imphal on Friday.

Babie Shirin, India Today, New Delhi, Dec 9, 2023 : The Manipur Police on Saturday morning rescued a student of DM College of Science in Imphal and arrested eight alleged kidnappers along with weapons, during a search operation at Yumnam Huidrom village in Imphal West district.

According to the police, the student was abducted from the New Boy’s Hostel of the DM College on the afternoon of Friday, December 8.

Superintendent of Police of Imphal West Shivakanta Singh said, "After being informed about the abduction of the student, Laishram Chinglen Singh, 22, police carried out raids in different places of Imphal West district to trace and rescue him."

The kidnappers demanded a ransom of Rs 15 lakh from Laishram's parents and said that they would kill him if they failed to do so, the SP said.

Police conducted raids at different places and around 2 am on Saturday, the police team raided Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai and found the missing student in a house belonging to Asem Chaoba, 63, along with four other people.

The police team detained the suspected kidnappers, Khwairakpam Rajen Singh, Sukham James Singh, Moirangthem Amarjit Singh, Taorem Rohit Singh, Kayenpaibam Hemjit Singh, Sandam Romen Singh, Khagembam Dayananda Singh and Sarungbam Umananda in police custody.

“From preliminary interrogation, it is revealed that the kidnappers belong to the KCP (PWG) groups, and they are working under Lamyanba Khuman”, SP said, adding that a car and three weapons were recovered from their possession.  

Agencies and The Hill Times: The Manipur police rescued a kidnapped student and arrested eight alleged kidnappers along with arms and ammunition during a search operation at Yumnam Huidrom village under the on Saturday, sources said. 

Imphal West District police launched the search and rescue operation following a complaint lodged by one Laishram Shyamchand stating that his son Laishram Chinglen, a student of the DM College of Science, Imphal was kidnapped. 

The student was abducted by a group of armed men from his hostel room at the said college on Friday. The kidnapped student was a resident of Ngaikhong Siphai village in the Bishnupur district of Manipur. 

The police said that during the operation, the kidnapped student was rescued, and eight alleged kidnappers namely Kwairakpam Rajen, Sukham James, Moirangthem Jit, Taorem Rohit, K Hemjit, Sandam Romen, Khagenbam Dayananda and Sarungbam Umananda were arrested with arms and ammunition.

Following the report of arrests, a large number of women stormed the gate of the Imphal West District Police station and demanded the immediate release of the arrested persons.

Superintendent of Police, Imphal West informed the representatives of the women in agitation that the arrested persons would be produced before the court after being registered an FIR against them, a woman leader who attended the meeting with the SP told the newsmen at the gate of the police station.

The agitators were informed to make bail applications for the arrested persons in the court, she added.
