Raju Bista takes stock ofconstruction work of NH 717A
YOWAN MOTHAY, EOI, KALIMPONG, NOVEMBER 28, 2023 : Darjeeling MP Raju Bista on Tuesday inspected the progress of construction work of the National Highway 717A.
Officials of the National Highway and Infrastructure Development Corporation were present during the visit. This strategic infrastructure project, funded entirely by the Centre at a cost of Rs 2650 crore, is designed to serve as a crucial alternative route to Kalimpong, Gangtok, upto Nathu La, on the China border; connecting these areas to Bagrakote in Dooars.
NH-717A was envisioned not only as a means of facilitating all-weather connectivity for the residents of Kalimpong but also as a strategic lifeline for defence forces along the international border, he said. Its completion would ensure rapid development and progress of the entire region.
During his visit, the M.P. had the opportunity to engage with the local community, and heard their enthusiasm about the project, as well as their concerns. Bista said: “On behalf of the people from our region, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari for their commitment to linking erstwhile remote villages to the National Highway gridline.
This transformative initiative has fostered connectivity and accessibility, and is playing a pivotal role in enhancing the overall quality of life for the people in these previously isolated areas.
The positive impact of NH 717A extends to the agricultural sector, development of grassroots tourism, increased employment opportunities for the youth, and improved standards of living for the citizens.”
He said his vision was to connect all the nearby villages to National Highways like NH-717A through PMGSY, so that the fruits of development could reach each and every village in the hill regions of Darjeeling and Kalimpong.
