Jalpaiguri district administration launches door-to-door survey to collect details of migrant workers

Rough estimate suggests around 40,000 people from district migrated to other states for jobs

TT Correspondent, Jalpaiguri, 03.11.23 : The Jalpaiguri district administration has launched a door-to-door survey to collect the details of migrant workers of the district who have not come to Duare Sarkar camps or sent their family members to key in their details.

Sources in the administration said that a rough estimate suggested around 40,000 people from the district migrated to other states for jobs.

“However, at Duare Sarkar camps held recently, names of only 13,669 migrant workers have been registered and uploaded on the state government’s website. As the figure is much less than the estimate (around 35 per cent), a door-to-door survey was launched last Monday,” said an administrative official.

The state earlier this year introduced the facility of enrollment for migrant workers at Duare Sarkar camps to prepare a database of Bengal's migrant population.

Across Bengal, the details of 14.25 lakh migrant workers were enrolled at the camps, said sources.

Shama Parveen, the district magistrate of Jalpaiguri, said teams would conduct surveys across the district till November 10.

“They will collect basic details of migrant workers from their families. Also, the families, and in case any migrant worker is at home, would be apprised about the West Bengal Bhabishyat Credit Card Scheme so that he can start his own business at his native place instead of migrating,” she said.

The scheme launched by the Mamata Banerjee government provides loans up to Rs 5 lakh to individuals for businesses.

If any minor has left studies and has become a migrant worker, the benefits of the students’ credit card would be elaborated.

“It will encourage students to continue with their studies through educational loans,” said an official.

Once the data is collected through the survey, the details would be uploaded on the Karmasathi portal introduced by the state labour department.

“The survey can help us get an actual estimation of migrant workers in the district. Data will be updated regularly,” the official added.
