Siliguri school girl murder accused remanded to jail custody
Abbas was produced in Siliguri Court amid tight security. He was produced after completing a total of 14days of police remand. He was last produced on September 1 and then was remanded to police custody for four more days.
On Tuesday also hundreds of people from various social organisations raised silent protest at the court premises. The mother of the victim and her family members were also present. The mother of the victim broke down and collapsed on the round in the scorching heat, demanding capital punishment for Mohammad Abbas.
According to advocate Birendra Rasaily, Abbas admitted the crime before the judge, stating he had made a grave mistake and was ready to face the consequences of his action.
Special Public Prosecutor, POCSO, of Siliguri Court Sushmita Basu said lawyers had been demanding speedy trial of the case. She said the accused had been sent for judicial custody but the date had not been recorded for the next hearing.
She explained that while Abbas had confessed in court, it might not be legally valid without proper legal representation.
To address this, a lawyer from the Legal Cell had been assigned to Abbas. Once the lawyer filed the necessary petition, the court would accept the confession.
Prime accused in Matigara murder case Mohammed Abbas on Tuesday made a plea before the Siliguri Court to be given an opportunity to meet his parents.
“I may be punished for my crime, but provide me with one chance to meet my mother,” he said, requesting the judge to grant his wish to meet his mother once.
Special Public Prosecutor Susmita Basu said the court would consider his request to meet his family.
