Major believed killed in gunbattle: In an encounter major of the Assam Rifles, a jawan of the Sikh Regiment with 10 Kuki militants killed

SNS, IMPHAL, 1 SEPTEMBER 2023 : A major belonging to the Assam Rifles and a jawan belonging to the Sikh Regiment with 10 Kuki militants are believed to have been killed in an encounter early this evening in Manipur, according to informed sources from the frontline.

The incident happened at Amu Khul, which is boxing legend MC Mary Kom's native village, located west of Thamnapokpi village in Bishenpur district.

The bodies are yet to be retrieved and the Major's body is said to he huddled up with the bodies of the Kuki militants.

And there has been no official confirmation of the deaths till now.

Meanwhile, the fourth consecutive day heavy singling using mortars, Lethode bombs and rocket propelled grenades continued on the Meitei villages of Narain Saina and Thamnapokpi areas without respite.

A Meitei civilian was injured after sustaining a bullet wound in the area today.

At least eight persons have been killed and 18 injured, including two security personnel, in Manipur's Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts following continuous gun battle between Kukis and Meiteis over the last 72 hours, officials had said on Thursday.

An official said firing was continuing intermittently in the foothills of Khoirentak in Bishnupur district and adjoining Chingphei and Khousabung areas in Churachandpur district.
