Outrage in Siliguri over body of minor school girl found with face smashed

PRASHANT ACHARYA, EOI, SILIGURI, AUGUST 22, 2023 : Tension prevailed in Siliguri throughout the day on Tuesday following the discovery of the body of a minor girl in school uniform on Monday evening at Motajote in the Matigara area. 

The face of the girl, a Class XI student of Nepali Government High School near Darjeeling More, was smashed with bricks. 

The police recovered the body. Commissioner of Silikguri Police Akhilesh Kumar Chaturbedi held a news conference after the arrest of Mohammed Abbas, a 21-year-old youth, on Tuesday morning for his involvement in the case. 

He said preliminary inquiries had revealed that the accused had attempted the murder after the victim denied sexual favours. 

The arrest made in the Palpara area of Siliguri followed prompt actions by the police on the basis of CCTV footage collected. 

There was outrage over the incident in various areas under the Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad area. Hundreds of people gathered at the Siliguri Court premises when the accused was being produced. 

The family members of the victim and common people of Siliguri demanded the death penalty for the accused.
