Kalimpong NGO toils hard to replace plastic bags with paper bags

Don't Miss

YOWAN MOTHAY, EOI, KALIMPONG, AUGUST 10, 2023 : To keep out plastic bags that pollute the environment, Nok Danra in Kalimpong has turned fabrication of paper bags into a rural industry since the past one year.
Coordinator of the work Suk Tshering Lepcha says plastic bags should be weeded out of the village society and markets and replaced with paper bags.
Plastic bags are polluting the city, drains are getting clogged. In villages accumulated plastic bags are preventing the draining of water which is flowing through the road itself.
Since plastic pollutes the environment, efforts are being made by the government and non-government or ganizations alike to eliminate the use of plastic.
Now the demand for paper bags in Kalimpong is growing and more than100 kg of paper bags are being sold daily.
People in outlying areas are also asking for paper bags. At present, four workers are engaged daily in fabrication of paper bags. \
It is a way of creating employment opportunities as well. If the practice of making paper bags can be introduced in every village and settlement, the environment can be kept clean and women and youths get an employment opportunity.
