Funds released for management of legacy solidwaste in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, says Raju Bista

YOWAN MOTHAY, EOI, KALIMPONG, AUGUST 1, 2023  : The first instalment of funds towards "Integrated Scientific Solutions for Improving Legacy Municipal Solid Waste Management in the Indian Himalayan Region" under the National Mission on Himalayan Studies has been released for projects relating to scientific solid waste management in the Darjeeling and Kalimpong Municipalities.
Darjeeling Lok Sabha M.P. Raju Bista said on Tuesday. Legacy waste, incidentally, is solid waste accumulated over the years in landfills and barren lands.
According to Bista, under this project the researchers would seek to mechanize the landfills with advanced technologies such as segregation of legacy waste, recycling of plastic waste treatment, utilization of construction and demolition waste, processing of biodegradable waste, and treatment of leachate from legacy waste.
The segregated waste will be processed further and converted into various utilities; such as, organic waste into vermi compost, plastic waste into making flower pots and construction waste into bricks.
Bista said: “Our Darjeeling and Kalimpong regions are one of the most beautiful places on earth. We are blessed with gorgeous natural beauty, amazing biodiversity, and greenall around. It is the primary duty of all of us to keep it clean, green and healthy for our future generations
