Uniform Civil Code not desirable for Sikkim, says JAC
SUJAL GURUNG, EOI, GANGTIOK, JULY 2, 2023 : Uniform Civil Code is neither desirable nor necessary in the context of Sikkim as of now, the Joint Action Council declared on Sunday after a day-long symposium on UCC.
A one-point resolution was passed which said: “In the light of Article 371F and the prevailing customary laws of various communities in Sikkim, it is submitted that the proposal for Uniform Civil Code is neither desirable nor necessary in the context of the State of Sikkim as of now.”
Representatives of different political parties, thinkers, lawyers and NGOs participated in the symposium.
With the one month of feedback and suggestions on UCC ending on July 12, within a few days to follow the resolution would be submitted to the Law Commission.
Vice President of JAC Pasang Sherpa said: “This is a very important issue as it concerns the future of Sikkim, but no representative from the ruling party came to attend it. If they cannot make a decision they can at least discuss, but they did not come. We are disappointed.”
The Law Commission has sought views and is expected to come up soon with its recommendations on the UCC.
